The Planets & Dwarf Planets
Planetary Reports are generated by "TheSky" software. (http://www.ki0ar.com/planrpts.html) These reports provide predicted data for the planets on the first of each month for the current year. The rise and set times for the Sun and the Moon for each day of the month are also included in the reports. These reports have been optimized for the Denver, Colorado location, however, the times will be approximate for other locations on Earth.

(All times are local unless otherwise noted.)

* Planetary Highlights for April - Start off April's evenings by looking west to see Jupiter before is disappears. Then you can't miss Venus as it approaches it's maximum brightness by the end of the month. Then look east to catch Mars and Saturn. Both of these planets are visible almost all night long. Early risers may be able to catch Neptune, Mercury and Uranus before sunrise. The Lyrid Meteor shower peaks around the third week of April and should put on a good show without interference from the Moon.

* Mercury - Is stationary on the 3rd. Mercury is at greatest western elongation (27° above the eastern horizon) on the 18th. Look for Mercury with a good pair of binoculars low on the eastern horizon about 30 minutes before sunrise. Mercury rises at 5:59 a.m. on the 1st and about 5:13 a.m. by month's end. Mercury is in the constellation of Pisces shining at magnitude 0.4.

* Venus - Sets at 11:26 p.m. on the 1st and about 11:24 p.m. by month's end. Venus is easy to spot in the early evening sky in the west all month. Venus is at greatest brilliancy (magnitude -4.7) on the 30th. Venus is in the constellation of Taurus shining at magnitude -4.6.

* Earth - N/A.

* Mars - Sets at 5:37 a.m. on the 1st and about 3:35 a.m. by month's end. Mars is stationary on the 15th. Look towards the east to spot the Red Planet soon after sunset. Mars is in the constellation of Leo shining at magnitude -0.4.

* Jupiter - Sets at 9:56 p.m. on the 1st and about 8:33 p.m. by month's end. Look for Jupiter low in the west soon after sunset. Jupiter is in the constellation of Aries shining at magnitude -2.1.

* Saturn - Is at opposition on the 15th, rising as the Sun sets. Saturn is at its best viewing for the year this month. Saturn rises at 8:25 p.m. on the 1st and about 6:16 p.m. by month's end. Look for Saturn low in the east soon after sunset. Saturn is in the constellation of Virgo shining at magnitude 0.2.

* Uranus - Rises at 6:31 a.m. on the 1st and about 4:37 a.m. by month's end. Uranus may be difficult to see through the morning twilight glare, but binoculars may help. Uranus is in the constellation of Pisces shining at magnitude 5.9.

* Neptune - Rises at 5:11 a.m. on the 1st and about 3:15 a.m. by month's end. Neptune can be spotted in the early morning hours before sunrise. Neptune is in the constellation of Aquarius shining at magnitude 7.9. 

Dwarf Planets
* Ceres - Sets at 8:23 p.m. on the 1st and about 7:26 p.m. by month's end. Ceres is lost in the evening twilight glow. Ceres is in the constellation of Cetus shining at magnitude 8.9.

* Pluto - Rises at 2:03 a.m. on the 1st and about 12:01 a.m. by month's end. Pluto is in the constellation of Sagittarius shining at magnitude 14.1.

As always, good luck at spotting these two, a large telescope and dark skies will be needed.

Astronomical Events

Meteor Showers
* The Lyrid Meteor Shower - The Lyrids are typically visible between April 16 and 25. Maximum occurs during April 21-22. Although the maximum rate is about 10, there have been instances during the last 200 years when rates were near or over 100 per hour. The average magnitude of the meteors is near 2.4 and the speed is described as rapid. About 15% of the meteors leave persistent trains.

Comets
* Comet C/2009 P1 Garradd begins heading south this month, passing out of Ursa Major into Lynx. Comet Garradd dims from 8th to 9th magnitude. Comet Garradd should be visible through backyard telescopes or binoculars under dark skies.

* Cassini - March 27, 2012
Icy Moons through Cassini's Eyes

"These raw, unprocessed images of Saturn's moons Enceladus, Janus and Dione were taken on March 27 and 28, 2012, by NASA's Cassini spacecraft.

Cassini passed Enceladus first on March 27, coming within about 46 miles (74 kilometers) of the moon's surface. The encounter was primarily designed for Cassini's ion and neutral mass spectrometer, which "tasted" the composition of Enceladus' south polar plume. Other instruments, including the Cassini plasma spectrometer and composite infrared spectrometer, also took measurements.

Before the closest approach of this encounter, Cassini's cameras imaged the plume, which is comprised of jets of water ice and vapor, and organic compounds emanating from the south polar region. Later, the cameras captured a nine-frame mosaic of the surface of the moon's leading hemisphere as the spacecraft left the moon.

After the Enceladus encounter, Cassini passed the small moon Janus with a closest approach distance of 27,000 miles (44,000 kilometers). The planet was in the background in some of these views.

Early on March 28, the spacecraft flew by Dione at a distance of 27,000 miles (44,000 kilometers) and collected, among other observations, a nine-frame mosaic depicting the side of the moon that faces away from Saturn in its orbit."

* New Horizons - March 07, 2012
New Horizons Stamp Drive Completes a 10K - and Keeps Going!

"As fast as NASA's New Horizons spacecraft is heading toward Pluto, the drive to honor this historic exploration of the ninth planet is speeding toward its finish. Less than a week remains to put your name on the petition supporting an effort for the U.S. Postal Service to commemorate Pluto and New Horizons on a postage stamp.

In just over a month since the drive was announced, more than 10,000 people have signed the online petition. But mission leads would like to have many more signatures before they close out the list on March 13 - the 82nd anniversary of the announcement of Pluto's discovery by American astronomer Clyde Tombaugh."

* Dawn - March 21, 2012
Dawn Sees New Surface Features on Giant Asteroid






"PASADENA, Calif. - NASA's Dawn spacecraft has revealed unexpected details on the surface of the giant asteroid Vesta. New images and data highlight the diversity of Vesta's surface and reveal unusual geologic features, some of which were never previously seen on asteroids.

These results were discussed today at the Lunar and Planetary Science Conference at The Woodlands, Texas.

Vesta is one of the brightest objects in the solar system and the only asteroid in the so-called main belt between Mars and Jupiter visible to the naked eye from Earth. Dawn has found that some areas on Vesta can be nearly twice as bright as others, revealing clues about the asteroid's history."

'Mount Sharp' On Mars Links Geology's Past And Future

"One particular mountain on Mars, bigger than Colorado's grandest, has been beckoning would-be explorers since it was first sighted from orbit in the 1970s. Scientists have ideas about how it took shape in the middle of ancient Gale Crater and hopes for what evidence it could yield about whether conditions on Mars have favored life.

No mission to Mars dared approach it, though, until NASA's Mars Science Laboratory mission, which this August will attempt to place its one-ton rover, Curiosity, at the foot of the mountain. The moat of flatter ground between the mountain and the crater rim encircling it makes too small a touchdown target to have been considered safe without precision-landing innovations used by this mission."

* Mars Exploration Rover Mission (Spirit and Opportunity) - March 27, 2012

SPIRIT UPDATE: Spirit Remains Silent at Troy - sols 2621-2627, May 18-24, 2011:

"No communication has been received from Spirit since Sol 2210 (March 22, 2010).

More than 1,300 commands were radiated to Spirit as part of the recovery effort in an attempt to elicit a response from the rover. No communication has been received from Spirit since Sol 2210 (March 22, 2010). The project concluded the Spirit recovery efforts on May 25, 2011. The remaining, pre-sequenced ultra-high frequency (UHF) relay passes scheduled for Spirit on board the Odyssey orbiter will complete on June 8, 2011.

Total odometry is unchanged at 7,730.50 meters (4.80 miles)."

OPPORTUNITY UPDATE: Slight Drop of Left-Front Wheel - sols 2901-2906, March 22-27, 2012:

"Opportunity is positioned on the north end of Cape York on the rim of Endeavour Crater with an approximate 15-degree northerly tilt for favorable solar energy production.

Radio Doppler tracking passes for the geo-dynamic investigation were performed on Sols 2903 and 2904 (March 24 and 25, 2012). Atmospheric argon measurements were performed with the Alpha Particle X-ray Spectrometer on Sols 2904 and 2905 (March 25 and 26, 2012). Additional Panoramic Camera (Pancam) images were taken on several sols.

The project is continuing to investigate the anomalies from Sol 2899 (March 20, 2012), that indicates apparent downward motion of the left-front wheel and a stall in the robotic arm (Instrument Deployment Device, or IDD). On Sols 2901, 2904 and 2906 (March 22, 25 and 27, 2012), further imaging of the rover's position and detail imaging of the Mössbauer (MB) spectrometer on the end of the IDD were performed along with a series of diagnostic robotic arm motions. The IDD moved without any problems. Motor currents and actuator motion were all nominal. Detailed images of the Mössbauer spectrometer showed no evidence of any off-nominal contact with the ground. Careful review of the left-front wheel suggests that the wheel might have moved more than one time, although these are very small motions (a few millimeters). No other wheel has shown any indication of motion. The project continues to assess the left-front wheel stability.

As of Sol 2906 (March 27, 2012), solar array energy production was 306 watt-hours with an atmospheric opacity (Tau) of 0.521 and a solar array dust factor of 0.488.

* Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter Mission - March 07, 2012
NASA Mars Orbiter Catches Twister in Action

"An afternoon whirlwind on Mars lofts a twisting column of dust more than half a mile (800 meters) high in an image from the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.

HiRISE captured the image on Feb. 16, 2012, while the orbiter passed over the Amazonis Planitia region of northern Mars. In the area observed, paths of many previous whirlwinds, or dust devils, are visible as streaks on the dusty surface.

The active dust devil displays a delicate arc produced by a westerly breeze partway up its height. The dust plume is about 30 yards or meters in diameter.

The image was taken during the time of Martian year when that planet is farthest from the sun. Just as on Earth, winds on Mars are powered by solar heating. Exposure to the sun's rays declines during this season, yet even now, dust devils act relentlessly to clean the surface of freshly deposited dust, a little at a time.

Dust devils occur on Earth as well as on Mars. They are spinning columns of air, made visible by the dust they pull off the ground. Unlike a tornado, a dust devil typically forms on a clear day when the ground is heated by the sun, warming the air just above the ground. As heated air near the surface rises quickly through a small pocket of cooler air above it, the air may begin to rotate, if conditions are just right."

Camera On NASA Mars Odyssey Tops Decade Of Discovery

"Ten years ago, on Feb. 19, 2002, the Thermal Emission Imaging System (THEMIS), a multi-band camera on NASA's Mars Odyssey orbiter, began scientific operations at the Red Planet. Since then the camera has circled Mars nearly 45,000 times and taken more than half a million images at infrared and visible wavelengths.
"THEMIS has proven itself a workhorse," said Philip Christensen of Arizona State University, Tempe, the camera's principal investigator and designer. "It's especially gratifying to me to see the range of discoveries that have been made using this instrument."

Highlights of science results by THEMIS over the past 10 years include:

Confirming a mineral exposure selected as the landing site for NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity
Discovering carbon-dioxide gas jets at the south polar ice cap in spring
Discovering chloride salt deposits across the planet
Making the best global image map of Mars ever done
Identifying safe landing sites landing sites for NASA's Mars Phoenix lander by finding the locations with the fewest hazardous boulders
Monitoring dust activity in the Martian atmosphere
Discovering that a large crater, Aram Chaos, once contained a lake
Discovering that Mars has more water-carved channels than previously thought
Discovering dacite on Mars, a more evolved form of volcanic lava not previously known on the Red Planet

THEMIS combines a five-wavelength visual imaging system with a nine-wavelength infrared imaging system. By comparing daytime and nighttime infrared images of an area, scientists can determine many of the physical properties of the rocks and soils on the ground.

Mars Odyssey has a two-hour orbit that is nearly "sun-synchronous," meaning that Odyssey passes over the same part of Mars at roughly the same local time each day. In September 2008 its orbit was shifted toward an earlier time of day, which enhanced THEMIS' mineralogical detection capability.

Says Christensen, "Both Odyssey and THEMIS are in excellent health and we look forward to years more science with them."

NASA launched the Mars Odyssey spacecraft April 7, 2001. Odyssey arrived at Mars Oct. 24, 2001. After arrival the spacecraft spent several months in a technique called aerobraking, which involved dipping into the Martian atmosphere to adjust its orbit. In February 2002, science operations began."
